I am Andrea G. Shenkman, the author and first Curious Cat of The CGB System.
Career Growth Basics is a result of a life-long interest in:
1.how things work which fuels my motivation to be a curious cat.
2.how to make things better, which keeps me investigating which strengthens my research skills and expands my knowledge.
My curiosity and research have led me to work in:
- Retail: found out about marketing and sales.
- Marketing: learned how to create and implement and monitor marketing plans.
- Sales: learned the value of good customer service….no matter the industry.
- Fortune 500 companies: learned how to use listening and communication skills to maintain and support ethical behaviors.
- Psychotherapy: learned the value of listening.
- Career Counseling: learned how to honor the needs of the individual when it comes to a job search.
- Academics: in-class and online College Professor. Saw how knowledge has many forms and implementations. Gained an increased understanding of the use of computers.
- My own business: had a few of these over the years. Motivation and discipline are the most important skills of being your own boss.
My career journey is best described by this Anais Nin quote:
“Life is a process of becoming, a combination of states we have to go through. Where people fail is that they wish to elect a state and remain in it"
My job experiences have been eclectic. My varied career experiences are the result of my pursuit to end a career rut because of one (or more) of the following situations:
–a bad boss
-toxic company culture
-unrecognized accomplishments
-low pay
-business bankruptcy. I had what I considered a great job at an outreach clinic. One Friday, I left work excited about a recent meeting that outlined a new course for the clinic. On Monday morning, we (all the clinicians) found the doors of the business were locked with a posted notice of receivership.
*The job that gets the highest rating from me was the position I had at the international headquarters of a Fortune 500 company where I experienced an ethical business culture. I was on track to become a manager in five years. I left that company because of an unsolicited job offer from someone in my business network to work at a pharmaceutical company as Executive Assistant to the Vice President of Marketing. The pay and benefits (at the time) were extraordinary. I decided to take the plunge since if it did not work out I could go back to the Fortune 500 company.*
