I have permission to tell this story but I do not have permission to use the user’s name.
So, although the name of the user is fictitious, the experience is not.
Chrissy approached me after class saying she did not belong in college and wanted to drop out.
I asked her where she did belong.
Her startled reply was: “I don’t know.”
I asked her if she was willing to do some work over the weekend to see if we could work together to find out where she did belong.
She said yes.
I asked her to write down these questions:
I emphasized that there are no right or wrong answers and that she should take the time to spend time thinking about her responses.
I told her to write her responses in a form that made sense to her. She could use sentences or a mind map or drawings or an outline or bullet points. I was not going to read her responses. What I wanted her to do was to present her responses to me after the next class.
She said OK.
This is what Chrissy presented.
I am a waitress.
I do not like standing on my feet for such a long time…..every day. It’s good because it’s a busy restaurant. I make good money; but there’s little time to sit down.
I do not like what I see when I think about spending the next twenty years being a waitress.
(I asked her what she saw. She said, “old and tired…unhappy.”)
I like talking to my customers and taking care of them.
I’ve always messed around with doing my friends’ and families’ hair. It’s like a hobby. I like taking care of them. We have fun trying new things and hanging out and talking.
I entered college because my Mom nagged me about doing something with my life that made me happy. I'm always complaining about my job.
I thanked her for sharing her career story with me.
She said she didn't have a career, just a job that was going no place.
I asked her the reason she wanted to quit college.
She said she’s not a student and feels like she’s wasting time and money because she doesn’t know what she's doing at college. She said college made her feel lost.
I asked her what work she wanted to do to make money.
She shrugged her shoulders.
I asked her if she ever thought about being a beautician.
She got angry and said she’s not into all that “beauty stuff.” I said it’s called beautician because of the products used to take care of hair.
She said “Oh.”
I asked her if she was willing to do some research. She said yes.
I gave her the name of the person running the beautician school at the Community College. It was a 10-month program that included details about how to start and run a “Beautician Shop”.
I asked her if she ever thought of creating a place called “Chrissy’s Hair Hangout.”
She said “Oh.”
I, also, gave her the name of a Beautician School in the area that had a 15-month program.
She left excited about these new possibilities.
When she returned two days later, she told me she had transferred her tuition dollars to the beautician program at the Community College. When she left me the other day, she found the beautician school on campus and met the manager of the program along with some students. They answered all of her questions. Two of the students walked with her to the registrar's office to sign up for the program.
Also, she reported that she went to her waitressing job and asked her boss if he would train her to be a bartender so she could wait tables and bartend on Friday and Saturday nights while she completed the college program and while she was establishing her business.
And,
that’s how Chrissy designed her career purpose
and
created her career progress plan.
